If you want to start biking, then you have come to the right place! The following is a guide to help you have a successful first ride. On top of that, there are some tips to help you stick to it once you get started biking!
The Best Bike for You
Here are four of the best bikes for beginners to help you decide what cyclist you want to be.
Road Bike
Road bikes contain skinny tires and low handlebars. They are used in triathlons and long-distance races due to their aerodynamic nature. If you want something to work out with or want a bike that is a bit more intense than the road, bikes are the way to go!
Fixed Gear Bike
Fixed-gear bikes are for cyclists that are purely in it for fitness. If you want to burn calories or are training for a race, then a fixed-gear bike is right for you. A fixed-gear bike does not allow coasting or freewheeling. You are going to need to make constant use of your leg strength to keep the bike in motion.
Cruiser Bikes
Cruiser bikes are made to maximize the rider’s comfort. You are not going to be racing anyone with this bike; however, you are going to enjoy some strolls. The seat, handle placement, and tires make the ride as smooth as possible. If you want a short-distance vehicle or a way to kill some time, then cruiser bikes are made for you.
Hybrid Bikes
Hybrid bikes could be considered the jack-of-all-trades in the cycling world. There are so many designs for this type of bike that you will be hard-pressed to find two models that are the same. If you are unsure what type of riding you will be doing or what to look for, you cannot go wrong with a hybrid.

How long should a beginner cyclist ride?
If you are a complete beginner, then you should bike no more than 20 – 30 minutes to start. Depending on how active you are, this is going to be either easy or difficult. Regardless of how you feel, you do not want to overdo it at the beginning. If you push yourself too hard, then you are not going to want to cycle the next day again. Consistency is key to seeing progress as a cyclist. Keep in mind a 6-hour bike ride every two weeks is not nearly as beneficial as 30 minutes a day.
Once you have stuck to this regimen for a while, then you can start increasing the time spent on the road. The more you bike, the more you will like it and the harder you will want to push yourself.
Sticking to it
If you are having trouble sticking to a consistent schedule each week, then it is time to make some changes. If you are having difficulty getting up in the mornings, then start biking in the evenings. On the flip side, if you do not have time in the evenings, then get up earlier.
It is recommended that you get an accountability partner to help you with something like this. Even if they cannot go out on the road with you every day, keep in contact and check in to make sure they are sticking to their training. You could also sign up for races to encourage you to train. What is important is that you get out there each day as you improve yourself. Without this mentality, then you are going to struggle with biking!
