Despite being one of the most popular hobbies in the world, getting into fishing is harder than it sounds. Before you go cast the line for the first time you have to make sure you have the equipment necessary to participate in the activity. So what do you need to go fishing? Let’s find out!
State Fishing License
As excited as you are, don’t make the mistake of jumping straight into fishing. Unless you are fishing on private property, it is absolutely imperative that you get the proper credentials before participating in the activity. Getting caught without a license can lead to a fine of up to $500.
Thankfully, a fishing license is affordable and easy to obtain. You can pick one up at your local sporting goods store, online, or even at a Walmart near you.

Fishing Rod
Unless you decide to go net fishing, a rod is one of the most important components of a successful fishing experience. Getting a sturdy base that will hold whatever you plan on catching is a must for any new fisherman. Rods come in different variations so find a buddy and take a few trips to help find out what you like best.
Fishing Reel
A fishing rod is nothing without its reel. As such, owning a reel that you are comfortable casting and reeling back in can make or break your experience. Spincast reels are the easiest to manage when you are starting out. So they are recommended before experimenting with other options.
Fishing Line
A strong fishing line is a must! Having a weak line break on you can ruin your experience especially if it is early on during the day. Make sure that on top of what is in the rod, you have a spare line too. For most pond fishing, you can get by with a 6lb-10lb monofilament line.
Fish Hooks
Without fish hooks, there would be no way to snag them when they bite. The size of the hook will vary depending on what you are fishing for. Take into account the creatures in the area and decide from there.

Bait
There is a whole slew of bait to choose from. Because of this, it is hard to determine which one is best for you. For example, topwater baits are going to snag you an entirely different species as opposed to your standard worm. Figure out what you want to fish for and experiment with bait from there.
Weights
Having a weight is mandatory if you want your bait to sink down into the water. Without a weight, you will not be able to delve into the water and get the fish that reside below the surface. There is a wide variety of weights on the market; however, if you are not sure what to start with then an egg sinker is simple and sure to do the trick!
Bobbers
Although not required, bobbers can add a lot to your fishing experience. If you struggle to accurately feel when something is on your line then having a visual aid will help you out.
